Why did you become a doula?

I became a doula after my first pregnancy ended in a sudden and very traumatic miscarriage. I did not have an adequate support system at the time and knew that if I was going to become pregnant again I needed one. Google lead me to learn about both midwives and doulas and I knew I had found a new purpose. I took a doula training one month later and have been supporting families ever since. My goal for 2022 is to train to become a Certified Lactation Counselor.

How many births have you attended?

I'll admit I stopped keeping a count after 70 or so, and that was a few years back. I have been wonderfully lucky in that I have been able to work with several different doula teams in both Ohio and Idaho in addition to my own practice, and that has given me many opportunities to support families in many different capacities: postpartum, breastfeeding and childbirth education as well as childbirth. Every family I come into contact with is unique, and I tailor my services and prepare myself based on that family's needs.

What types of births have you attended?

I think a quicker answer is what I haven't attended (luckily, no car births yet!) I regularly attend both hospital and home births. I have supported unmedicated vaginal births, vaginal births with pain medication (IV narcotic, epidural, Nitrous Oxide, etc.) medical inductions, water birth, Cesareans, TOLAC (trial of labor after Cesarean), VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), and twin birth. Basically - I've seen a lot!

Do you do photography?

While I am not a professional photographer, I do recognize that in our current climate it is often not possible to have both your doula and your birth photographer present at your birth so, I do what I can. I have both an iPhone 13 Pro and a DSLR camera I bring with me to all births. My primary role is as your doula, but I do make an effort to capture as much of your labor and birth as you would like. You may view a small gallery of some of my photos here.
